The state of Arkansas got its name from an Algonquian name which is linked with the ‘Quapaw Indians’. Its capital is Little Rock and is situated in the middle of the Arkansas State. Little Rock is the most populous city in the state and Arkansas is said to be a land of rivers, thick forests, lakes and fertile soil. Arkansas Delta is made up of rich alluvial soils; it is due to the repeated floods by the Mississippi River. Additionally the southeastern part of the state is occupied by the Grand Prairies which is also fertile and good for agriculture.

Crowley’s Ridge which is a geographical formation divides the delta of Arkansas and hills that range from two hundred feet to five hundred feet above the alluvial plain. Many major towns located in the eastern part of Arkansas have been formed due to this Crowley’s Ridge.

The north western area of the state which consists of the Ozark Mountains and Ozark Plateau and the southern area which consists of the Quachita Mountains are divided by the River Arkansas. Mount Magazine in the Quachita Mountains ranges is the highest point in the Arkansas State. The state of Arkansas also consists of many caves and around 12 ‘Wilderness Areas’.  These regions are known for recreational activities like fishing, hiking, camping and hunting.

Arkansas has seventy five counties. It is one of the largest when it comes to the number of counties in a single state in U.S.
