The state of Montana is situated in the west of U.S.A. and it is the largest landlocked state in the country. It is bordered by North Dakota and South Dakota in east; Idaho in west and southwest; Wyoming in south and in north it shares a boundary of five hundred and fifty five miles with 3 provinces of Canada i.e. Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

The state was named after the Spanish word ‘Montana’ which means mountain or mountainous country. The Montana State is ranked as the fourth largest state after Alaska, Texas and California. The land area of the state is 380,850 km and is the fifty sixth largest national state subdivision in the world. However it is ranked as the seventh state with least population and third with least dense population among all the fifty states of U.S.

The western third of the state has many mountains. Thereby the state derived its name and it also has other names such as the ‘Treasure State’ and ‘Big Sky Country’. It also has sayings like ‘Land of the Shining Mountains’ and ‘The Last Best Place’.

The economy of the state is dependent on the services accompanied with ranching, lumber, wheat farming, tourism, oil and coal mining in east and hard rock mining in west. There are many tourist spots like Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Many visitors are attracted to these places.

Prairies occupy around sixty percent of the state, the northern area of the Great Plains. The mountains in Mountains in geographic and geologic sense are a part of the northern Rocky Mountains. The largest continuous land mass which is over three thousand feet high in the continental U.S. is the Beartooth Plateau. The highest point in Montana State is the Granite Peak which is 3,901 meters high.
