The state of New Mexico is located in the southwestern region of U.S. It is among one of the Mountain States. It is flanked by an international border of Chihuahua and Sonora states of Mexico in west; Texas in south and Oklahoma in east. The total land area is 314,460km. The state is the 36th most populous state and 6th as the least dense populous state. The state is also ranked as 5th largest state among all the fifty states of United States.

The capital of the state is Santa Fe and the largest city is Albuquerque. The state also few major rivers like River, Canadian, River Rio Grande, River San Juan, River Gila and River Pecos and River Rio Grande is the fourth longest river in U.S.A.

Earlier the state was inhabited by Native Americans for many years. The state has largest per cent of Hispanics in U.S. It was also populated by Latin American Spanish residents who migrated to New Mexico. The state is ranked as second for the percentage of Native Americans and fifth for the total figure of the Native Americans. First is Alaska for the percentage of Native Americans. The state was mostly inhabited by Navajo and Pueblo tribes and thus Hispanic and Native American cultures can be exclusively seen. The flag of the state has red and gold colors which represent Spain. The flag has a Zia symbol. This symbol symbolize for sun according to the Native Americans.

The state of New Mexico has 33 counties. Ten counties were formed in the year 1852. FIPS code i.e. Federal Information Processing Standard code which is used for identification of counties and states, are allotted an entry. The FIPS code is 35 for the state. Each county is combined with the state code and written as 35xxx. This FIPS code for each county is connected with the census figures for that each county.
