The state of New York is situated in the northeast region of United States of America. It is flanked by Pennsylvania and New Jersey in south and Vermont and Massachusetts in east. It also shares an international border with the Canadian provinces i.e. Quebec in north and Ontario in northwest. The state also has a sea border along with the Rhode Island. It is in the eastern side of the Long Island. To known the differences between the New York City and New York State, the state is mostly known as New York State. The state achieved statehood in the year 1788 on 26th of July. It was the 11th state to join the Union.

The state of New York is ranked as the 27th largest state and 3rd most populous state in the United State of America. It is the 7th densest populated state and New York City is the most populous city in U.S. The city has a population of more than 8 million. It is known as a major financial, transportation, manufacturing and cultural center. This has resulted in attraction of lot of immigrants. As a result the U.S. Department of Commerce reported that New York is the most preferred place for the foreign tourists. The state and city of New York derived their names from the 17th century Duke of York, future James ll and Vll of U.K. and Scotland and James Stuart.

The state consists of 62 counties. The latest counties to be created were in the year 1914. The Bronx County was created from the city of New York, which was a part of the Westchester County and then combined with the New York County. The counties have derived their names from many sources like they are named after various Native American words, royalty, cities, New York State politicians, American statesmen and military men and British provinces.
